Biography
Dr Lorna Sanders trained at the London College of Dance and Drama where she studied a range of different dance styles. She did an MA in Dance Studies at the University of Surrey and her doctoral research focussed on dance education. Her thesis, Dance Education Renewed, featured an investigation of the GCSE and A Level dance specifications which she has taught, moderated and examined for many years. She has also taught a range of courses in history, aesthetics, choreography, dance education and dance analysis in higher education at BA and Masters level. She delivers numerous in-service training courses for teachers on behalf of a range of organisations and in particular for the National Resource for Dance, where she is a regular contributor to the annual summer schools.
Lorna lectured on the part time post graduate diploma/MA in Choreography at the Fontys Academy, Holland; she has also lectured on a part time Masters course, Performance Studies: Dance, at the University of Malta; and was Course Leader for Ballet Education Practice, a teacher training course run by the Royal Ballet School/Royal Opera House Education Departments. As a freelance education consultant, Lorna was involved in the production of gifted and talented material as the dance contribution in the ‘Arts Guidance Document’, published by DfES. She also developed the Gifted and Talented Framework for the Youth Sport Trust/Dance Network. This featured the creation of a model of good practice to support talented dancers within the school setting. She has provided training in talent recognition and advice for various dance agencies such as Dance East and DanceXchange. Currently, she is the principal assessor for the Diploma in Dance Teaching and Learning.
Creative Outputs
Lorna has written numerous resource packs, articles and study aids for the Dancing Times, the NRCD and for Stopgap Dance Company. She is the author of two books on Akram Khan’s Rush and Henri Oguike’s Front Line, published by Dance Books. She provided a chapter on Akram Khan’s ma (2004) for a book edited by Professor Janet Lansdale, Decentring Dancing Texts, published by Palgrave, 2008. She co-edited the second edition of Fifty Contemporary Choreographers with Martha Bremser, published by Routledge in March 2011 and edited Dance Teaching and Learning: Shaping Practice published by Youth Dance England in 2012, with a second edition in 2013.
